The Western Slopes

The Western Slopes (Novers Hill) is a vast area of ecological importance

About us

A vast area of species rich calcareous grassland and lowland meadow, with riparian woodland along it's borders and a thriving stream. In the south of Bristol just 2.5 miles from the city centre. It's been long known as a designated site of nature conservation interest (SNCI), amongst the urban landscape of south Bristol between Knowle West and Bishopsworth. It is bordered by Hartcliffe Way, Novers Hill and Novers Lane, beginning just beyond Parson Street in Bedminster and stretching all the way to Imperial Park Shopping Centre in Hartcliffe.

See below for more details about our ecological importance and many articles in the press.

We would like it to be protected from development and become an asset for the local community as a place for leisure and appreciation for the wildlife we are lucky to have in this corner of South Bristol.

Bristol council has voted to protect it's green spaces:

Lovell consultation to build 157 houses

In 2012 the Western Slopes were included in the Knowle West Regeneration Framework .

In 2021, the beginnings of a development proposal have arisen.

Sign the petition to ask Bristol City Council to stop building on green spaces in the city. And to use existing 'brownfield' sites first.

Avon Wildlife Trust recognises Bristol's Western Slopes as a vital wildlife corridor, and stands with those people calling it to be protected from development.

The Local Plan

Each city has a local plan to say which areas of the city could be built on.

These are called
'site allocations'.

The Western Slopes has 3 site allocations on it:
BSA1108 - Land at Novers Hill, east of Hartcliffe Way and west of Novers Lane / Novers Hill. 10.6 hectares.

BSA1114 - Land at Novers Hill, adjacent to industrial units. 2.2 hectares.

BSA1119 - Land to east of Hartcliffe Way, south of the Waste Depot. 0.9 hectares. This seems to be the site of the new recycling centre.

(Please note that this is not a planning application and therefore, we are not carrying out public consultation on the proposal at this stage).

Goram Homes  (BSA1108)

From the Goram Homes website. Goram homes is the council's housing company.

"Novers Hill (Phase 1 & 2), Filwood

Around 440 new homes could be built at Novers Hill, already allocated as a housing site within the Bristol Local Plan. The land within council control could deliver around 360 homes. Part of the site is privately owned and will be brought forward separately by a third party.

A planning strategy has yet to be agreed, but part of the site next to Belstone Walk (the former infant’s school) it set to be delivered ahead of the wider site, which poses topography and ecological challenges. Goram Homes will work with experts to ensure the development is carried out in an ecologically sensitive way to produce an exemplary scheme."
